We were approached by the BBC to create all the VFX for their hour-long spectacular on the volcano of Pompeii. This involved recreating the eruption as if it happened today, and showing the process of mummification as a body is buried in ashes.
We supervised all the location shooting, collecting live action plates for us to compose the CG eruption onto. The erupting pyroclastic flows were generated using smoke and fluid simulations on a huge scale. We also directed a motion control shoot, creating a partly stop-motion and partly 3d animation. This showed how an ash covered body decays and then can be made into a plaster cast, like the famous 'statues' of the Roman dead.
