The basis for this documentary series, initially created by Windfall productions for Channel 4 in the UK, was to closely follow real doctors as emergency cases arrived at hospital. As it is often unclear exactly what is wrong with a patient, and time is always of the essence, it is down to the doctors to use their best judgement to decide on the cause and thus the treatment.
Atomic Arts was commissioned to create the graphics to show for each case what the doctor's possible diagnoses were. This was done by digitally tracking live footage of the patient as he was being examined by the doctor. We would then match move a virtual 3d representation of the patients internal body, and 'enter the body' by seamlessly transitioning from the real patient into the CG body. Zooming in, we would dissolve away the layers to find and then show the possible problem, and the respective solution. In this way the viewer could easily see what kind of life-risking decisions these doctors have to make every day.
